Relationship-Building and influence

Tips for getting sponsors to support your science

Advancing your science requires the ability to communicate effectively with decision-makers. By understanding the fundamental principles of relationship-building, you can craft more compelling communication and strategies that get sponsors and funders to support your work. In this webinar, Dr. Roger Aines and Amy Aines taught us how to build trust and rapport to foster productive relationships with sponsors, earning a reputation as a “go-to” resource for funders.

Key Takeaways from this Webinar:
  • Scientists can use the gift of information to build relationships with decision-makers.
  • When speaking to a decision-maker, you are not defending a position. Instead, you are teaching and influencing them.
  • Initially, building rapport and matching the other person’s energy level is vitally important to establish a relationship.
  • There are four influence styles: asserting, rationalizing, uniting, and connecting.

“It’s important to think about trust-building from the standpoint of your integrity, your intent, your capabilities, and paying attention to the results that speak well of the work you have committed to.”
